I was a Police Officer in Chicago for 32 years. Back in the early 70s I was a Uniform Officer. The vice detectives arrested a street walker (prostitute). After booking she was sent to the woman's lockup. 2 hours later our station received a call from the woman's lockup requesting us to come and get the man we had sent as a woman out of their lockup.
One of the woman lockup matrons had observed the subject standing up while he/she urinated. a Nurse was called and ex amened the subject and stated it was a male as it had a small penis above its vagina. As he/she had a penis he/she was classified as a male.
A year or so later I heard the the subject had committed suicide. He/she was the first and only hermaphrodite I have knowingly come across.

"Hermaphrodite" implies that both sexual organs are present and functioning. HOWEVER- this DOES NOT Happen in humans. This is why people no longer use the term 'hermaphrodites' in reference to humans, but rather the word intersex, which refers to a person born with part of one set of sexual organs, and part of another.

It's actually not as rare as some people think. One statistic I saw said 1 in every 3,000 births is born intersex. Think about how many babies are born every day, and it must be far more common than we realize.

And it's not any harder for them to find love than the rest of us. We all come with different backgrounds, and just like anyone, an intersex person must find someone who loves them for who they are. There are plenty of people in the world who are open minded.

her·maph·ro·dite
–noun 1. an individual in which reproductive organs of both sexes are present.

So, YOU are right.

Some of the most interesting information you will get is actually from fictional medical dramas on television. There is an episode of House (season 1) and a really old episode of ER that deal with this. The writers are forced to do a TON of research, so you will get a very small taste of what it is like for some people to be hermaphroditic.

Actual people who have this issue are not very open about it.

Nowadays they are referred to as intersexuals ("hermaphrodites" has a negative connotation). This is a difficult question to answer since most babies who are born intersexed are operated on immediately to make them one gender or another (usually female). Usually, intersexuals have a small penis above their vagina, this is because the clitoris and penis develop from the same embryonic tissue. I would say that it would depend on the individual. Those who have not been surgically made one gender or another might or might not have both "working" parts.

I have no clue about your question, but I would like to commend you for your attitude of kindness about a terribly difficult reality.
