For some reason whenever I look at myself in a picture I think I look hideous. Even if the picture is just from the neck up. Then in mirrors I feel just fine (even a little confident). I don't understand how I can see two different people. What's the difference?

mirrors are accurate. Pictures from cameras can be deciepful. I have the same problem as you. With cameras, many factors can either make u look better or ugly, such as flas and room lighting and even temperature! as temperature effect speed and quality of light emitted from camera. Try going to ur bathroom with lights off and take a pic with flash on ... Then take a pic with no flash but a nice, warm and orangy light glow within a room (from a sunset or dull light)... Which one looks better?

At least u aint the people who look good in pictures, but ugly in mirrors, which mirrors again, is the REAL THNIG. Lighting can completly rid off acne and other blemishes from a picture on cam, making a face look smooth and pure, which is another reason why camera can either be bad or good making it deceipftul!

My advice: Stay away from good cameras! and take pics with cell phone cameras (low quality)

The pictures are a still image in time. When you stand in front of someone, people notice your demeanor, the way you stare at them, the way you blink, etc. In a photo, all they see is lighting and physical features, so in that sense they see a distortion. If you want to look good in a picture, be wary of what lighting you're in. I recommend taking pictures in lighting that's as even as possible. Outdoor lighting during the day is good, and places like the beach are, too (now you know why so many models have photoshoots at the beach!)
Avoid indoor lighting, which tends to be uneven (like in schools or bathrooms.)
Also, webcams distort per se. If you have a cute tiny nose, a webcam can make it look like a buzzard's beak!

depends on what you mean by "accurate depiction." but if you want to see yourself like other people do, a photograph would work best. a mirror shows you in reverse while a photograph actually shows you from others' perspective.

Wow, i feel the same way, I like to think the mirror is more accurate. Cameras don't always get everything without perfect lighting.

Mirror...a picture can be way off because it captures one second of you and you can look in the mirror as long as you want.

Well, mirrors are what you see is what you get

While pictures are just colors thrown on film that forms the right image.

I always ask myself this question. i think a camera disorts you features and a mirror does not

Me too! I think "that can't be me!" in the photo. I hope it's the mirror. (-:
