Assuming you're doing a standard 3 tab asphalt/fiberglass shingle here's a workable way to estimate the job. First determine the number of square feet of roof you're replacing. Second, determine if the roof has a walkable pitch or will roof jacks be necessary. Third determine if you are removing the old shingles. With all of these factors answered, multiply the number of sq feet of roof to be removed by 0.45/sf . Take the square footage of roofing to be shingled and multiply it by $1.25 to $1.45 per sq. foot. the $1.25 to 1.45 includes fastners, felt roofing nails, shingles and labor. Add 0.30/sf for non-walkable roofs requiring roof jacks. Next if it is code in your area you will need to add approx $2.00-$3.50 per Linear foot of eave for ice and water shield. Calculate the Linear footage of the eave and rake edges of the roof and multiply that number by 2.00/L.F. for metal drip edge. Count the number of roof vents presently on the roof and multiply that number by $35-$40 each. Count the number of vent stacks in the roof and multiply that by $35-$55 each for the flashing they will need. Count the number of masonry chimneys that penetrate the roof plane. Add approx. $150-$275 per chimney for step and counter flashing. Once the old roof has been stripped inspect the sheathing for rot and the replacement of rotted would should run approx. $2.85-$2.30 per sq. foot. You need to have a jobsite waste container(Dumpster) delivered to the jobsite so don't forget to add approx. $400 to the estimate. Add in some hourly labor to load the dumpster and whee the yard for errant nails. Make sure to roll for nails on the neighboring property too in order to prevent bad blood between your customer and their neighbor. Finally don't forget to add in the cost of the building permit and some additional money for the time you expend standing in line for the permit and waiting on the jobsite for the inspector. Good luck and keep tarps ready to cover the roof at a moment's notice.

Go to the closest construction supply store. Every roofing material has different prices.

Make a list of the types- tiles, shingles, shakes,-from cheapest to most expensive. Take the prices too, Put in the various types of flashings, undersheathing, eaves, vents, since those have to be replaced too.
You also need to ask the prices of other materials just incase you need to replace an entire roof? from drywall to plastic vapor barrier to rafters, trusses, plywood or strand board sheathing and another barrier (weather) such as tar and gravel, asphalt, cedar shakes or tiles.

Concrete tiles need to go over a secondary roof membrane instead of uniform sheaths of paper. This is where the thermal reflective foil sheathing comes in.The roof structure needs to be strong enough to handle that weight.

Come up with the cost of a good ladder for yourself, insurance, safety equipment and you're in business.

they will give you free estimates.....call 3 reputable companies and get quotes....but you have to make sure the roofing materials are comparable to each other, or else your estimates won't be that helpful to you. Make sure you get a warranty on your roof too......we had ours done a few years ago, it was $5,000.......30 year warranty......
