Windows could not find the audio to install used compaq restore disks.

Go to the HP web site (as they now own Compaq) and look in the download section. They should have the audio driver for the PC available as a free download. If you can not find it there (HP is not supporting some of the older Compaq's) try driver.com next.

Why use an out of date operating system? Go to http://www.ubuntu.com and download or order a CD. The OS is free, plus you will get all the programs you will ever need FREE!!!
