Ammonia poisoning is most likely. Could also have been too cold of water. There is far more to taking care of fish than just feeding them. Before you replace him, do a little research on the proper care and keeping of bettas and all fish you may want to keep. Thanks, good luck and sorry about your fish.

Do you test your water?
When you say woman in the pet store, you mean an adult working in retail? Do you think this adult working in a retail store even graduated high school? What makes you think she knows anything about fish?

It really sounds like an issue of poor water quality. My first bet would be a high ammonia count. You should check the ammonia and be ready to make a water change or two to level things out.

sorry to hear about your fish, but when betta's see their own reflection they think it is another fish and go crazy casue they are very protective and must be alone!! hopefully you did not have ay other fish with him casue that would have been the problem

If your fish could see his own reflection, he would have attacked it and would have died from overexertion. Was he alone in the tank? Betas are supposed to be alone.
