Guitars are pretty much an essential instrument in many types of music, especially rock or sub-genres of rock such as pop-punk. Many musicians know a bit of at least one other instrument besides their main one, because multi-talented musicians are greatly valued in the world of music.

let me say that you need a sense of music so they play an instrument and they can hit the pitch better. Also let me say Matthew bellamy is not just a guitarist in his trio called Muse. He also can play 11 different instruments. Which would probably make him the most talented person on that list.

generally speaking, the lead singer/ guitarist is most likely also the main song writer for the band, so they probably want to get the credit for singing and playing their own songs. Plus, it just looks extremely cool.

Maybe they have more than one talent..?
Also, that way they don't have to deal with as many people in the band.
But I'm just guessing.
