I'm trying to connect to my 2wire gateway from a laptop using a wireless adapter card, but I just get the message "can't resolve dns name" on the explorer screen. How do I fix this?

DNS stand for "Domain Name Service". On the Internet, every web site has an IP address. The only way a computer can find anything on the Internet is by its IP address. A name, such as "yahoo.com" means nothing to the Internet. The name has be changed into an IP address for your computer to find it. That is what DNS does. It is a list of site names with matching IP addresses. It is what turns "yahoo.com" into the IP address 66.94.234.13.

If your laptop is not find DNS, it is probably missing the address of the DNS server. Go into the properties for your wireless card, and find the TIC/IP Protocol. Click on it and go into the properties. You will find a place where you can set an IP address for your computer. Under that is a place for putting in the IP of your DNS service. Enter the IP address of your router (or DSL/Cable modem) and it should then be able to find DNS.

try to ping the gateway, example: c:\>ping 192.168.0.1
the output will tell if packets are being returned or not.
make sure that your gateway is giving out ip numbers via dhcp OR that you have manually configured your wireless adaptor card with a valid ip number, the address of the gateway and ip numbers for the DNS servers of your provider.

Check that the DNS setting on the laptop is the same as the one in your Gateway
