I've studied the American west for thirty years and I have never, ever, ever heard this nor have I ever read this. Every website detailing COlorado history and the history of Denver in particular never mentioned ANYTHING about a black founder of Denver. It was not settled by Blacks, nor was it named after a black man, and there were no large groups of blacks that settled there.
I suspect this is just on e more attempt to attribute some obscure Black man with inventing, discovering, developing something that they really had very little if anything to do with during Black history month. As real historians, we have to combat this tendency every single year. We have to show that while there have been some very clever black Americans many of the stories of great blacks are false. For instance, a black man did NOT develop the first stop light. They had been around for nearly fifty years before the first black man made some minor changes to existing lights. Also blood plasma transfusions were NOT developed by a black man, they had been done for decades before a black doctor made some innovative changes to the process. Also George Washington Carver was NOT the invertor of peanut butter. The Aztecs and the Mayas had been making peanut butter for hundreds and hundreds of years before George Washington Carver was even thought of.
So we have to be careful during Black history month that we don't get sucked into old false traditions about the alleged accomplishments of black men and women. Research on your own, read a lot of books, and don't believe things just because some spokesmen for a cause says something.
Good luck.
