My niece is getting married in Kilgore Texas and I thought we would drive on down to San Antonio and see the sights. I know we want to do Sea World. What else is fun?
Also I'd like to drive into Mexico one day and look around - any suggestions?
And maybe one day drive over to the gulf coast and hang out on the beach. Any suggestions?

Here's what you need to know first!

Mexico would be about 5+ hrs away since you've never been to this area, and traffic is very bad right now with the whole passport thing. And the beach is a good idea also, but not much is going on right now until spring break, plus the water will be cold. And if you did all you say you would definatley need more than three days! So I would suggest just doing two major visits in S.A. and then maybe drive to Galveston, it's better than Corpus! While at Galveston (it's small) look for "The Strand" or "The Strip," can't remember right now. It's made up of little shops and a great ice cream parlor! Then you can walk over to the beach, and this is only about 2 hrs from S.A. including traffic.

Back to San Antonio.... Sea World would be good if it's just adults, kids would get bored. It's not as extravegant as it use to be, Fiesta Texas would be better for either. If it's just adults I would definatly recommend "El Mercado" near downtown, and eat at "Mi Tierr." It's a grea mexican cruisine if you rarely have mexican food, it's perfect. Atmosphere and the people are great!

HAVE FUN!

I haven't done the Mexico drive in a while so I'll leave that to others.

In San Antonio the Riverwalk is a must see. Nearby is the Alamo. If you are at all interested in history, the National Park Service has the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. There is an excellent, free movie at the Visitors Center at Mission San Jose.

Fiesta Texas is the other huge theme park. Both are top notch and a lot of fun...even for this 50+ year old.

Throw in some fine museums and you've got plenty to do in SA.

Corpus Christi/Rockport area on the coast is about 155 miles south of the city on IH-37. The beach areas are either the Padre Island National Seashore or Mustang Island. Only suggestion I have there is try to avoid Spring Break because of the crowds...and for some reason the last few years we've had rotten weather around that time. That area is a lot of fun to visit the rest of the year.

Hope that helped.

Ok, if you do go to San Antonio, definitely go to Sea World, but do not go to the zoo, you will not be impressed. Also do not go to the botanical garden, it isn't great either. You should go to the Alamo though, it is very cool. Other than that I would suggest going down to the river walk and taking the boat tour. But be careful, the drivers in San Antonio are very aggressive and don't believe in turn signals. Also, I wouldn't recommend walking around at night, especially around the river walk, there is a lot of crime in that area especially. Also, my husband and I are from CA, so we thought when we went to Corpus Christi it would be nice, it was horrible! There was trash everywhere, and the oil from the rigs (that you can see from the beach) was like a slick on the beach and the water. It smelled bad too. Don't waste your time going there, you will only be disappointed.

I will be happy to answer the Mexico question. I would NOT cross the border at Laredo. Nuevo Laredo is very dangerous right now. We still go across at Del Rio. Ciudad Acuna is fine. I never feel in danger there. Its slightly farther than Laredo, but well worth the extra miles for safety sake.

My favorite places for the beach are Mustang Island State Park next to Corpus or Port Aransas. Have a great time! San Antonio is wonderful.
