i've had my experiences with dell and their warrenty garbage (practically forcing you to pay if you want your computer to run).

since it's a dell, i wouldn't replace anything. i'd just get a new laptop altogether because dell sells their already put together computers so that they're "fixed" and nobody can replace or upgrade their dell computer.

that's the nasty game they play with consumers and their computers

i don't know about that model, but when I tried to upgrade my old Dell (I liked the case) I was told that Dell motherboards are not replaceable. They design them differently from mainstream motherboards and so these upgrade boards won't fit in Dell cases. You can try the Dell forums they may be able to help...

How do you know you need a mainboard?

You have to contact Dell for the cost. Unless anyone answering has specific access to Dell parts and pricing you're not going to get any true answers regarding the cost of the repair.

Now some manufacturers offer a 1 year post warranty option that you could purchase which may be cheaper than paying for a mainboard repair. You'd have to contact Dell and than wait for the post warranty to become active.

You will need to post your system specs. So you can find a compatible motherboard with your other peripherals. If I was you after you find what is compatible look on ebay.com or other auction sites. You will find them much cheaper than at retail stores.

i guess you will have to buy a bare bone, as the motherboard comes with its casing and screen, so it may cost you around $230...
