A flat tax would generally result in lower taxes at most income levels, as those at the top who do not pay taxes would spend less than they do to avoid paying their share, those at the bottom would pay a lower percentage.

People who make their living as tax consultants are understandably dead set against a flat tax, and lobby a lot to prevent it.

National sales tax would be more equatable to the lower income people.

I support the Fair Tax Plan by congressman Linder of Ga. It is a national sales tax on goods and services and excludes groceries and eliminates the IRS. See the book by Linder and Boortz. In case you didn't know the system of a flat tax rate that adjusts with income is what we have right now and look how bad it is! The Fair Tax Plan taxes illegals and terrorists as well and eliminates embedded taxes and provides the Government an amount of money equal to its current rate and can not be increased, therefore eliminating taxes as a political weapon for politicians and lobbyists.

No, the income tax is a bad idea. All 50 states have a sales tax. You would think that the Federal government could learn from that. All you do is exempt essentials (food, shelter, etc.) and put a sales tax on everything else. No tax forms, no special tax breaks for big business, no IRS threatening to put you in jail if you come up short. And if don't want to pay any taxes, ever, you can do that, just buy essentials and no luxuries.

If there is a flat tax it would be inherently unfair.

Why?

Lets say the tax is 20%. For a person who makes $20,000 a year, 20% of their income payed in taxes would cause a great deal of suffering. Heck, for a person who makes $50,000 it would cause some pain. For a person making several hundred thousand dollars a year... 20% only means that they can only afford 23 karat gold plating on the shift knobs of their six new sports cars... instead of 24k gold. boo hoo.

Like it or not, tax systems that charge the rich more than the poor help our society balance itself. That, along with religion (and the brainwashing of the american dream that many people aren't smart enough to rise above), are the things that keep the poor from murdering the rich.

No, I would support a FLAT tax rate for everyone, you make more you end up paying more anyway.

I would also suppport a national sales tax.

I dont feel that success should be punished. I don not feel that there should be deducts and tax breaks given as well.

Sounds good but a Federal sales tax on everything before it gets to the market place should replace income tax. It's fairer.

Yes . We need a flat tax. It would lower taxes,
and keep politicans from from corrupting the system by buying votes with tax deductions.

I'm not seeing a flat tax in our lifetimes...it would probably work, and would make sense, therefore it's not permissible. Sorry.

LOL
