You could but it would run incredibly slowly on only 333 mhz. I'd stick with OS 9 until you can buy a new or newer used iMac.

I do! Work in a Mac certified warranty shop. Small, so we service everything! To run OS X, make sure that there is 128Mb of RAM, and the processor is a 300 Mhz or faster unit. Plus, we put in the firmware update, then load 10.2.8.

You're talking PowerPC cpu, mainly, so use the OS that works in that, plus can make those accessories work, for that vintage machine. We do NOT try to run the latest version, as it is designed for new technology parts.

OS X runs just fine, as the Mach kernel, with the BSD TCP/IP and utility features totals less than 50Mb.

Folks who only 'know' Microsoft stuff would say it will run slowly, but, they are used to a bloated 200Mb, or larger, XP System, and huge memory resource control issues!

When you run a 'Nix, you are running a finely tuned product of millions of man hours of tests and use in computers in all the possible business, commercial, and individual uses over several decades.

Microsoft couldn't get anything of theirs to run as well, as error free, or immune to the "114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions", that are ONLY affecting Microsoft's defective products!

In fact, I have got some of my older Mac units to run other 'Nix OSes, like Yellow Dog Linux, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, also! The key is to have 128Mb RAM memory, plus, don't listen to idiot WinTrolls.

Who is yo9ur friend, the person who says you can't do it, or the person who urges you to try?

I wouldn't. That'd be like Installing Windows XP on a Pentium at 300MHz.

Well, I'm sure if OSX were as popular as Windows, it would have its share of exploits in the wild too, now wouldn't it. Probably, though we don't know for sure. Yes, it would be harder but it could be done if the hackers wanted to EVEN try.

Yellow Dog Linux, Ubuntu and all the others were designed to run on older systems so yeah, I can see how they would work.

I didn't say not to do it, I said it wouldn't be worth it. Turn your computer into a brick, if you want. I've used OSX. I've used it on 500MHz G4 systems with 256MB of memory and I found it to be slow, dirt slow. Not nearly as responsive as a G5 at 1.8GHz with 512MB of memory and that's what I would expect. I don't remember the system number but I do know the OSX on the 500MHz system wasn't the latest which was running slower than the newer version on the G5.

Windows XP can't run on anything less than 500MHz with 256MB of memory (not that I would, it's still slow). And OSX shouldn't be run on anything less either. Try it, if you want but I promise you, you will be disappointed. I mean, I'm not there to stop you but if I was there, I'd try.
