Tell them that they broke your trust and that you cannot tolerate a lie. They will have to earn your trust back because you will be forever doubting what they say to you and you can tell them that. The punishment is not being friends anymore. Do you really want a friend that doesn't know where you draw the line. Talk to the person about it and decide if you are willing to give them a 2nd chance and if the person does it again. Get them out of your life because you deserve better. Take care Heather

Why did they lie to you in the first place? Friends shouldn't lie. Maybe they were just looking out for you. I'd talk to them about it first. If they had a good reason it still isn't right but at least you'll know. But from then on make them know you only want the truth even if it does make you hurt.

It is hard not to retaliate when someone close to you has hurt you. Confronting someone who lies is the best thing you can do to let them know that they can't get away with what they are doing to you. Explain to them that this behaviour has put a serious strain on the relationship and now there is a question of trust. It is hard to trust what one says when one catches them in lies, if you feel you can't continue the relationship because of thier lies, than that is what you need to tell them. It may not cause them to stop, but letting the liar know that you have feelings, and that by thier actions they have hurt someone else, may cause them eventually to think twice about speaking a lie... but again, habits are hard to break, and it is your choice to decide wether you can forgive and forget and continue with this relationship. But honestly, punnishing them won't help... A lie is compulsive, and habitual... a lie is a way to hide a lack of self esteem... to make one seem like they are something they know they are not... a little understanding goes a long way, and perhaps building trust in the relationship is what you both need... this person needs to trust that she/he can be themselves around you and be vulnerable to you without getting hurt...

It depends. If it were a little "white lie" that was told to prevent from hurting your feelings, I would just ask your friend in the future to tell you the truth. I mean if it were something like..."What do you think of my new black mohawk and your friend said it was awesome and lied..thats nothing. But if it were a major lie ..I would say that the person is not your friend and never was. I would end the friendship immediately. Once a liar, always a liar.

Depending on how bad the lie. If it's really, really bad. I would instantly cut them out of my life! They are not your really your friends. If it's something not that bad then I would ask why they did whatever they did? If it sounds like a reasonable answer then, I guess you can give a try staying friends with them and let them not to let it happen again. It also really depends how long you've known them too. If not a good enough explanation. , well......I would explain how would they feel if the roles were reversed?????

The best punishment would be to just never speak with them again, depending on how hurtful that situation was.

Well, were they lying to you to protect you, or to harm you? Like, were they not telling you that your crush was going out with someone else because they knew it would hurt you? Or did they not tell you because they were the person your crush was going out with?
If they lied to protect your feelings, don't punish them. If they lied to hurt you, they aren't your friends, and you should tell them that you don't trust them anymore and can't be their friend.

You dont. If they asked for forgiveness from you that should be given. A TRUE friend accepts apologies. Doesnt punish friends.

Well I wouldn't punish them. I would simply ask them why they lied to you and explain to them that trust is an issue with you and that if you can't trust them, then you really don't want to be their friends anymore.
