I write shrot stories, poems, and I have a few novels in the making. I have contacted some publishers they said they like my stories and poems but, they dont deal with fictional stories or any type of poetry. Does anybody know of any publishing company that would be good to try? If anyone can help me in anyway I would very much appriciate it.

There is a magazine that publishes short stories. If you go to www.grimmyproductions.co.uk. There are submission guides for you and although you won't make any money, it will give you the opportunity to see if your work is any good. I hope this helps.

Barry M got it right (mostly). Short stories and poems are no longer published for the most part as the market is not there. The majority of publishers do NOT accept unsolicited work and you will get it returned with a rejection letter. Obviously, you have sent your work to the wrong publishers, too, if they don't deal in the genre' in which you are writing. VERY HARD to sell fiction today, and agents ONLY take experienced top of the line authors who have the next big blockbuster ready for market. It does not sound like you do. Connections are important, but as Barry M stated, for every individual who sees publication (and I am talking LEGITIMATE publishing not th eon line vanity garbage) there are hundreds of thousands who don't. The supply far outweighs the demand. Less than 1% of all manuscripts submitted ever become published, so your chances are VERY slim indeed. And poster hobo must be on drugs because I guarantee you that B& N or any other bookstore is not going to help you get published. Where he got that one I have no clue! More teen fantasy land stuff, I suppose.

Go to your local library and look for the Writer's Market. It lists publishers by the type of material they publish- short stories or poetry or mysteries. It also tells you how to submit your material.

Now short stories and poetry can be a hard sell as a book. You might want to consider submitting individual stories and poems to magazines first. When you have some published, it's easier to go to a book publisher as an already published author. The same book will give you information on magazines.

Good luck!

Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that breaking into writing and being published will be a long and arduous journey full of rejection and negativity. Most publishers only want established writers or people with name recognition (Paris Hilton wrote a book - yeah, that was worth $24.95). It seems they believe the American public only wants to read material either written by a celebrity or the same old tired drivel they have been producing for years. Your best bet to be noticed would be to self-publish and then promote your books yourself. If you are really, really lucky, someone will notice your work and offer you a deal. If you are like most of us writers, you write because you love it and you never expect to make a living at it. If you don't want to self-publish, then the best thing you can do is network. Talk to everyone you can think of to see if any of them know someone in the publishing business. Use those contacts as a way in the door. Once inside, sell, sell, sell. Remember, for every author who gets published, there are tens of thousands who don't. Good luck and keep the dream alive.

I can't help you but I can tell you, as one who has tried the same thing, that you are no longer speaking to publishers. You need a literary agent, and HE shops you around to publishers. NEVER pay a literary agent a dime--he gets a percentage of the sale of your stuff (which is what motivates him.) The up-front pay guys are all scams. But without a literary agent representing you, you really have no way to be published.
