i have 4, 1.5" - 2.5" convict cichlids. are they ready to breed? and when they are do the females get a goldish orange on their side? how much longer til they breed? they're in a 55 gallon tank with pleny of hiding places, and flat rocks

They will need to grow out to about 2.5" before they will be ready to breed. How long that takes depends partly on you. Keep up good water changes, keep the tank clean and feed a wide variety of quality foods will help them to grow more quickly and be more healthy. The coloration of both the males and females will become brighter and more intense when they are getting ready to breed.

Convicts a avid breeders and it sounds like they are getting ready. Place a flat piece of slate horizontally in the tank and when you notice them cleaning it with their mouths they are about to start laying eggs. They will become very defensive during this time so you might need to remove the other fish.

Like I said in your other question. They are going to breed when they are ready. They make great parents. They will protect their fry against the other pair.
