Do research...there are many books that will go into what god/goddesses are all about. Go with what you FEEL, not what people recommend. Only YOU can know what god or goddess to call upon.
I personally am drawn to Artemis and Morrigan...but that's me. It's different for everyone.
Follow your own path...

Yes the basic starting question. Start with which cultural branch of Paganism draws yo the most and learn all you can about their Gods and Goddess. You have the whole world to pick from. But most people pick those from the Western European traditions as they are the ones most often talked about.
You can pick which Phaethon of gods and goddess you identify with. But yes the one you pick may not think your ready yet and need to start with one of the lesser ones within that Pantheon.

* Each tradition and individual has different views. some say the Gods must choose you while others do chose the ones they are drawn to or the ones whit home whose energy they desire.
Some even say that being draw to a particular panthean is in fact the Gods choosing you.
My advise is to start working with the ones you like and are are drawn to and then if others choose you fine, if not keep working with the ones you like.
Personally I do not work with any particular pantheon, I just call them Godd and Goddess or Lord and Lady.*

You do not have to choose to work with any Gods or Goddesses if you prefer not to, Wicca/Pagan, basically all branches of the religion are free for people to decide on their own what they would like to practise, if something doesn't feel right to them, them they do not have to follow the guidelines that other religions have, like believing in God is mandatory to call yourself a true Catholic or Christian.
You also don't pick Gods/Goddesses and they don't just pick you, t is more of a spiritual thing in your own soul that if you feel one is more comforting in your heart to work with, then that is the right deity for you.
Since I always liked nature, I naturally chose the Earth path of Wiccan to persue, and the Mother Gaia, who's spirit is in everything, from trees and animals to the smallest grain of sand on a beach, because it felt right for me. Anything you choose (or not choose, if you feel comfortable not working with any deity) is fine, as long as you know in your heart that it is the right path for you to follow.

Just start working with them. Pray, make offerings. Work with different ones each time, and see what works for you. There are the lucky few who see their patrons in visions or dreams, but they are rare. Just pick a pantheon, and see who their various gods are. Choose what appeals to you. There are a vast many books out there on each group. I suggest a trip to your local library first.

by "God" i'm assuming you recommend YHWH, the God of Abraham. "God" is a identify, not a acceptance, and it applies to all the pagan deities to boot. of course, as a pagan, I definitely tend to have a miles better understand for deities that would desire to be called "pagan." i think of they have an "component," as you place it, over the Abrahamic YHWH, surprisingly as he's depicted by many Christians. Our Gods are actually not so egocentric, infantile and jealous as this YHWH character. Our Gods do not furnish the comparable "risk-free practices" you talk of simply by fact they don't pose available. YHWH might desire to be stated to prepare racketeering... "conserving" us in basic terms from His own wrath. I have not have been given any choose for such a deity and that i defy such underhanded enterprise. of course, I understand that it is not the way all Christians see YHWH and that i understand that. i'm particular He could be a loving and beautiful God, yet nonetheless, many stuff approximately Christianity do only not make any sense to me. The deities I persist with in no way wrote guidebooks... They planted Their information promptly into my existence with out desiring a written mediary. That seems lots extra powerful from my attitude and so i've got self assurance forced to honor that information. -Scarlet

if you are a Pagan, than you should already know which God or Goddess to work with.it should come inside of you and the deity.you and the deity being close and you feel comfortable being with Him or Her,and there you should feel closer to whichever one.i feel close the most with Hecate, but when i dont call on Her for the serious spells,i call on Morrigan.Morrigan i am close to also, but i am more closer with Hecate,b/c like you,i am a dark witch.and Hekate,is best with dark witches.but go with your heart on who you feel the closest with.you know that within your heart.and than it is all down hill from there.

well, sounds more like you are Wiccan, since being a pagan merely means that you are not a believer in an Abrahamic based religion. For example, Hindus are considered pagans.
As for which gods- well, they aren't mandatory at all - as well as you may choose to deal with some for one situation and others for another. For example, it really doesn't help to pray to Mars with fertility issues.
The gods choose you is a copout, IMO, though sometimes a god will choose to work through you for their own purposes.
Work with the gods that click with you - if you read about one and they sound right, then go with them. helps if you stick within a specific pantheon though - easier to relate.

Well now. If you are looking for an easy answer....honestly butterfly there isn't one. I have been active in Wicca for nearly 9 years now. I have been interested in it for much longer..but didn't dedicate myself to the study of one religion until after I had taken the time to learn about other world religions. I was raised in a Presbyterian family whose generations had been raised with the influence of the catholic system as their guide. But my mother being the kind of woman who prefers to learn and educate herself before passing judgement on anything or anyone, made it an easier transition for me. Needless to say, like yourself, I didn't know what pantheon to follow. I felt at first perhaps that I should learn the Pictish or Celtic tradition as my ancestry surrounding my maiden name is Scottish. But I had a difficult time choosing and connecting with the Celtic deities. Not to mention that I felt I should learn to speak the gaelic language for authenticity sake. This proved to be more than a little difficult. For awhile I used Hecate as my guiding Goddess as she IS the mother of witches. It was a little closer, but still not completely satisfied with my choice I decided to consider my most favored civilization in history and see how it felt to 'walk a mile of the path' in their sandals. With the decision being made to learn about the Ennocian path I found myself able to connect to Egyptian magick with much less difficulty then the previous attempts. The problem that most magickals have is that they feel they must decide right away because they want to jump in with both feet before testing to see if it feels natural to call out to Osiris or Kali or Aphrodite....Taking the time to learn what feels like it is meant to be uttered versus what feels strange or tongue twisting to say, is just as important as picking your deity(ies). You may decide that its important to follow family tradition if you have Celtic or Hindu or some other background. Or you may decide that you connect with certain deities because you've read and reread all the histories and myths surrounding that culture. Either way, the Divine is forgiving and accepting of your trial and error period. Its like getting new shoes...you have to try it on and walk around a bit first to see how it feels. It may be uncomfortable, or it may just feel like the most comfortable and natural thing in the world. Give yourself time. It took me over 5 years to decide that Egyptian was right for me. Then another two to establish myself with the names and traditions of the Ennead(Pantheon). I have recently in the past two months begun learning a bit of Egyptian too...so as to lend a bit more power to my magickal work. I was guided somewhat by my connections in the Pagan community...and by taking stock of what I had felt a desire to learn as a child, and most drawn to in a mythological and historical account of any one culture...I guess you could say "the Eyes(of Horus) Have It." Whatever you finally decide for yourself...you will eventually come back to one culture and pantheon that you find you are drawn to over and over again. With Patience, practice, and perserverance you will soon be walking the walk and talking the talk. Just as long as you continue to learn...you can never really go wrong in who you choose to call upon as your God/Goddess presence when you need a little extra help.

At one time, I did practice a form of Wicca centered on the Norse gods, but in my studies, I realized that there is only one Creator who existed before all other gods. Opening one's soul and self to other spirits can get one occupied by less-than-friendly entities, and if one is tranced, one has no defense against possession.
I decided to serve the One God, through His only Son and agent, Jeseus Christ, rather than tempt the lesser gods to rule me.
