Not nessessarily, when things are written to the HD they occupy sectors, the OS and larger files then the smaller lesser used ones, to speed up things, defrag your system regularly and clear things out you don't need, make the settings on your system, like Temporary Internet file at as low a setting as possible.
Making these changes and not down loading larger files, for a speedier drive, consider a external HD for your games, this way they are not bogging down the main drive.
I recommend to my clients to clean up there useless files, and keep a regiment of doing this, if that does not help, there is a simple memory upgrade, also for a gamer a higher capcity video card, 256mg is best or a 512mg is even better.
I am a MCSE and A+ tech and do upgrades and servicing in my in-home business, look to do the clean up route before a more drastic hardware decision.

Unless you are running your hard drive at full capacity, it will not make your computer run faster or slower. RAM is the big thing you need to upgrade if you want a faster computer. I have a 2002 dell system and I was running 256mb until about 6 months ago and i could barely run a internet browser and listen to music at the same time. i bought an extra stick of kingston 512mb for $50 at newegg.com and now i have a total of 768mb and the thing FLYYYYYS like a new corvette.

You should always have at least 10% of your hard drive free so that the Operating System (Windows) can have a place to swap memory in and out. With today's larger hard drives, 10% free is actually more than enough. Any more free space will not help your system to go faster.

you desire to have a minimum of 5gbs, even nonetheless it relies upon on what you're doing. I frequently recommend 10 presently in any case. How plenty area is XP applying on your Bootcamp partition? I actual have some ideas on that - there is a few utility called "Winclone" which will clone your bootcamp partition to any force (recommend exterior on your case). you may then kill the partition and make it smaller, then revive your residing house windows set up with Winclone. additionally, installation residing house windows on a Mac by way of Bootcamp would not slow IT DOWN or muck up the equipment. i exploit a MacBook professional with a 100gig partition for residing house windows 7 and characteristic experienced no sick effects. Mac OS does have a extra effective OS over all, yet working residing house windows by way of Boot Camp won't impact overall performance. loss of HD area will impact overall performance. issues CAN decelerate once you're applying virtualization utility like Parallels or VMWare, yet presently, even it is minimum.

Generally the more full your hard drive is, the slower your computer will go. It doesn't have a direct impact such as RAM and CPU. A fragmented hard drive will run slower also. Try deleting unwanted large files and then defragmenting.

It might boot faster and defrag faster but the things you mention aren't helped by more free space.
