To be absolutely accurate the Colts were never in the NFC. After the merger of the AFL and the NFL in 1970 Three teams from the NFL were moved into the newly formed AFC to equalize the numbers in the AFC and the NFC. The teams were the Colts, the Steelers, and the Browns.

The colts were in baltimore and then went to Indy but they were always in the AFC.

I believe the move was made following the '69 season.
