I noticed that the car was shaking while stopped and the engine seemed to be running rather rough. No change in rpm's. I stopped driving IMMEDIATLEY and plan on taking it to a mechanic ASAP, but I have to wait a few days to get it in - any thoughts on what it might be?? Engine misfire? O2 imbalance? Timing?

Here is the answer that you are looking for.

The only reason the check engine light will flash is if a condition occured within emmisions system that will cause damage to your catalytic conveter.

The most likely reason for your particular concern is, in fact, a cylinder misfire. A rich exhaust mixture can overheat the catalytic converter and cause it to melt down . This is why your check engine light flashed.

The misfire can be caused by innumerable situations. But the O2 sensor is doing it's job because it is reading an over rich condidtion. Most likely an ignition problem. Absolutely can not be a timing problem because your car does not have a distributor. It has a coil pack that is controlled but the ECM and cannot go out of time unless the timimg belt failed. If the timing belt failed you would be dead in the water because the engine would not run.

Good call on not operating your vehicle. I'm glad you "listened" to your vehicle!

A few years ago, my check engine light started flashing on my 99 OBS, and the engine started running really rough. I was forced to drive the car in this condition 200 miles to the nearest dealer. Turned out one of the spark plug wires was shorting, which sent unburned fuel down the pipe. I ended up having to buy a new electronic ignition module, and two new catalytic converters. That was an expensive lesson.

it could be a number of things but what makes sense the most is the O2 sensor. You can get a free diagnostic test from AutoZone. That will read the code that is making the check engine light go on. This could save you $89.00 for a diagnostic test from a service center.

Emissions related, could be an o2 sensor, my guess it's a knock sensor. It's okay to drive as long as the check engine light is not flashing.

Best thing would be to bring it to a mechanic. It could be an o2 sensor or a gasket leak. You might just need to change the oil. Change the transmission fluid also.

go to autozone or O'Reillys and they will scan it for free. it might be something simple you can change or it might be something major.
