I'm pretty sure it means you did something totally wrong and failed in something great. You made a big mistake. I mean there is no other way to explain. Hope that explains it.

It's an extreemly hurtfull way to say that a person cannot do any thing correctly, no matter how hard he may try.

"Big fat failure" means that the person is ridiculous in everything they do; "stupid", doesn't do anything right' unsuccessful....etc, etc.
