Basically, what happens when a star dies depends on its size at birth. Fueled by the burning of their own hydrogen/helium cores, all stars evolve, age, and eventually explode or expire, leaving behind stellar remains. Stars that are greater than eight solar masses when they are born usually end their lives in a gigantic supernova, one of the brightest events in the universe. After this violent and dramatic death, they leave behind a neutron star or black hole. Smaller stars shed layers over thousands of years, ejecting planetary nebula as they run out of nuclear fuel and enter their red giant phase. The ejected nebula is an expanding shell of gas that leaves behind a burnt-out, highly compact star known as a white dwarf.

It depends a lot on the star's size.
Stars burn hydrogen fuel in fusion reactions. The bigger the star, the more fuel it burns (kind of like an SUV vs a compact car).
Hypergiants~100 solar masses (Such as Eta Carinae in the constellation Carina) live only about 1 to 3 million years.
Giants~1.5-5 solar masses (such as Gacrux in the constellation Crucis) can hold on for anywhere between 100 to 500 million years or so.
Main sequence stars~0.7 to 1.5 solar masses (Our sun, Alpha Centauri A) can survive for about 10-15 billion years--our sun is already about 4.5 billion years old, so it's still middle aged!
Red dwarf stars ~ 0.2 to 0.64 solar masses (Barnards Star in Ophiucius, Proxima Centauri)...these are the Yugo's of the universe. Red dwarves can survive as long as a trillion years or more (in theory...the universe may end by then!)

What is so amazing about stars it that they are made up of chemicals that porduce nuclear fusion which is what makes the star light. When there are no more elements to produce nuclear fusion the gases begin to expan making the start appeear bigger. WHen the gases are all gone they can all collapse inward producing and black hole or become a dwarf

A star dies when it runs out of fuel to sustain the fusion reaction. This does not necessarily mean when the star runs out of hydrogen. Once the star runs out of hydrogen, the helium and other heavier elements can be used to continue the fusion reaction.
When the fusion reaction can no longer be sustained. The star dies, depending on it's size will depend how it dies.
