Many babies begin to "babble" around the 4-6 month age. You will likely hear a lot of one syllable sounds using b, m, and p . Occasionally, something will come out that you swear sounds like a word, but it is only experimentation. It varies from baby to baby, but generally sometime between 7-12 months, multiple syllable words with the same sound develop such as babababa or mama. Between 1-2 years is when you will likely see the biggest growth in language. If you talk to your baby, make a game of repeating his sounds to him, and read to him, he will begin to form words soon. Mama and dada are often first words for babies because those are easy sounds to make and when your baby does say them, it will get a lot of attention from you so he will want to say them again when he sees how happy you are.

Every baby is different. Some babies walk at 9 months old while others don't start till after they are 1. I have 3 children and none of them started "talking" at the same time. My oldest was 5 months, middle one was 7 months, and my youngest was about 8 months. It is hard to say when your little one will say one of those magic words just enjoy it when it happens cause when they get to be 5 or 6 you'll wonder why you were in such a hurry to ever hear them speak :)

It depends upon the child. I work at a learning center, and the kids in the infant room usually move up to mama and dada before they leave the room at 15-18months for the toddler room. The one thing I've noticed is that some kids are just quiet and take longer to get around to talking. Others have a lot to say and start babbling really early. Talk to your son whenever you get a chance (you might feel stupid, but it still stimulates his little brain) and be patient. Trust me, after they start talking there are many moments where you wish they had never learned!

They typically say "Dada" at about a year... "Mama" is usually a few months behind...
Your child will call you Mommy or Daddy, depending on what the other parent calls you. So, if you're holding your son and say, pointing to your husband, "Look! There's Daddy!!" He'll probably call him Daddy instead of Dada... same goes for "Mommy"... if your husband calls you Mommy when talking about you to your son, he'll probably call you "mommy."
Then again, some kids are very strong willed and make up their own names for their parents...

books say that they may start saying mama and dada as early as 7 months, but they don't understand what the world really means until about 10 months to a year

my first baby said sara first at four to five and quickly said dada about after.... mama at around seven months
my second baby said eat first.. she was seven to eight months.... with mama and dada coming at almost a year
my third he said mama at nine months and dada at thirteen months
fourth said dada first and that was seven to eight months
fifth it was mama first at nine maybe ten months
sixth baby is fourteen months now and although comes close (aahhmmaa? when he wants me) he has not said one word... nothing wrong... just busy working on other things... lazy maybe too since we respond to him without him having to say things.... one little "eh" and point and he has it... which is why some drs give for slow speech developement....
my reason for listing all those? was to show that every baby is different... no need to worry.... my oldest was doing full sentences at this age... my youngest not even trying different sounds till about two weeks ago.... he was busy perfecting other things...
best thing? relax let her go at her rate, work on the sounds (sound games) with her when she wants... and other things as she wants..... she'll put it all together on her own.... sooner than you know... and once they start, remember... they do not stop! ;)
good luck

general rule of thumb:
1 word phrase = 1 year
2 words utterances = 2 years
3 word sentences = 3 years
if your son is experimenting with syllables at 7 months I would say he is well on his way to mommy!

They usually say da da first because it is easier. Usually around 7 or 8 months but every baby is different. Now my 11 month old only says ma ma and he says it to me and his dad.
