The story is based on the controversial premise that there is a conspiracy within the Roman Catholic Church to cover up the true story of Jesus, that he was married to Mary Magdalene and there is a bloodline. According to the premise of the novel, the Vatican knows it is living a lie, but continues to do so to keep itself in power.
The story involves the Priory of Sion who are the protectors of the secret bloodline of Jesus Christ. The story alleges that Leondard DaVinci was a member of the Priory and included clues or codes in his artwork.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding this, many people want to believe it's true. However, Dan Brown's story is fictional and so is the movie based on his work of fiction.

it is all fiction so there is no reason to worry about understanding the plot in great detail.
