I am soon to purchase Mercury Grand Marquis between the years 1992 -2001. It has 4.6L V8 engine, 240hp. Will the towing of the boat be hard on the car's engine/transmission?

The towing trip is approximately 4 miles each way, to the Bay, 4 miles return home.

1 mechanic here informed me to install some type of cooling device to the transmission which will make the transmission last longer while towing.

Thank you to all my boating/car friends who submitted answers to my previous car/towing questions, as after reading your answers, the Ford Taurus was quickly deleted from my car consideration list.

Thanks - Curt

Curt, that car/engine combo should be fine. Just double check the owners manual for towing recommendations. You would want a transmission oil cooler installed for the tranny, thats what the mechanic told you.

No doubt the car will tow the boat but as stated earlier my question would have to be how well will it stop it? You should be fine as long as you do not have to stop quickly. If it was me I would defiantly look into installing a transmission cooler. I know you are only pulling it four miles each way but if you have any hills to pull in any hot weather it can damage the tranny.

yes i dont foresee any problems with toing the boat, you should be able to handle it very easily, transmission cooler is recomended but if its only 4 miles and not 4 miles bac and forth and not no hills to amount anyhting then you get by with out the transmission cooler, transmission cooler is recomened for any driving conditions lot of hills etc. where the tranny get get hot, second of all is this boat trailer equipped with electric brakes,? if so you need install electric brake controller etc.. to ur vehicle . with No tranny cooler you may drive the vehicle years with no problem but with out proper brakes and you cant stop it. then this could cause a major wreck to the boat and vehicle. also consider towing mirrors u want to be able to well see the boat behind you . and the traffic behind the boat... all import5ant to keep you and the investment safe. Good luck ... and be careful
