Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is a known novel and it even has its own movie.

I really liked the Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. It was about a pretty boy who sold his soul to remain young forever and it was written in the late 1800's so it's literature. I read it back in highschool so I can't remember the entire book, but I don't think Dorian performed any public good, but he did put on a public image that he was a nice guy. Hope this helps
