That means that you cannot read or write in your native language. Also, you can be illiterate in other languages, but it is not the same thing. There is a difference between being able to read stop signs and grocery lists, and to be able to write themes, projects, and business letters. Most computers have a "Spell Check" that helps with that. However, be SURE you have a word you want to use before you click on Spell Check.

Generally it tends to mean both, but it's usually applied to reading skills.
Writing is usually ungramatical (is that a real word or did I make it?) or poor spelling.
