The ultimate pride and belief in ones country leads them to believe that their culture, way of life, and political and economical methods are superior to all others.
The US, in its history, been imperialistic on many occasions due to nationalism. Manifest Destiny, which was the whole idea that it was our destiny, as Americans, as DICTATED BY GOD, that we spread our civilization to other less fortunate peoples and subsequently impose our will and our laws on them. We pushed the American Indians out of their native homelands, because we believed they were savages.
In 1898 and in the early 1900s, the US justified imperialism in the Philippines and in much of Latin America because we were protecting them and "showing them the way"

I agree with the other 2 answers that are listed but there is one component missing. It wasn't just land the the imperialist nations wanted it was the resources on the land they were looking for. Because they wanted to show other European nations that they were the best they needed to make themselves the best by manufacturing weapons so they could either protect or attack. They were not trying to settle and colonize many of these nations of Africa and Asia by moving into the area like they did in the Americas but take the mineral resources in these nations for themselves without letting the nations involved decide with whom they were to do business.

when a nation has a strong sense of nationalism they want their nation to be "top gun" or the best of the best. in order for a nation to be the best, they need power. to get that power, they need land. to get land, they practice imperialism!
