Can anyone please explain the use of the hold control on the auto gear shift lever on my Mazda 626 1996 ?

When you press it the hold light lights on the dash, and the transmission will stay locked in top gear and not go into overdrive. Handy when pulling a loaded trailer or driving in the mountains. Leave it off the rest of the time for better economy.

Sound's Like it's an Overdrive button for Highway Travel, almosts acts as another gear for High speed travel so it's easier on your gas mileage, and transmission.

From what I gather it is to make it shift like a manual transmission. It helps to maintain traction in rain, snow and ice.
