How do you know the converter is clogged?
Backfiring/no start can be caused by other things, like a slipped timing chain/belt.
Assuming converter is the problem, before you go off and spend your own $$$, know that all emission systems have a 50k warranty (by EPA mandate). Some cars have longer "hidden" warranties. Find the cause of converter clogging and have that fixed, so it doesn't happen again. For example, it could be a bad O2 sensor. Lastly, clogging in the exhaust can warp your exhaust valves, so maybe do a compression check before spending $$$ to make sure major motor damage has not already been done.

Well, Have to tell you that everybody is right. This does happen more often than most people realize. I once bought a car for $50 because he thought it was a dead motor. I bought it for parts, found out what was wrong, bought a cat at the local wrecking yard for next to nothing, and got it welded in. Sold the car for 2300 a week later.

Now the best way to at least get it to the muffler shop if you can't weld it yourself, is to get it towed of course. I didn't want to pay that expense, so what I did was cut a "V" notch in the front weld of the cat. This was loud as heck, but since I was on a one way trip to the muffler shop to get the cat welded in, I just lived with it.

If your catalytic converter is restricted,it creates back pressure and won't allow the engine to turn freely or "breathe". It's kinda like when you stuff a potatoe in the talipipe. There are only two solutions: Replace it with a new one or gut it/eliminate it.Becareful because the latter is illegal and it won't pass an inspection without one. Replacing it is you best option.

First you need to make sure that your catalytic converter is the cause of your vehicle not starting. If it cranks but doesn't start running then check your fuel pump. If it doesn't crank at all, then check the battery for power. If the battery is fine then check your starter. Good luck.

THIS IS THE JOB FOR THE MUFFLER SHOP ... the catalyic converter is part of the car's exhaust system and should be re-placed by a professional .... if you want your car to get fixed and stop using alot of gas and run properly ... spend the $'s and get the re-pair.............

Yeah, it usually works that way. You really need to replace your cat converter and everything should be fine. But if you wait too long you will have other problems that you will have to fix.

Of course. The exhaust is plugged up, it won't start, and if it does it will have absolutely no power. Get it fixed.

replace your catalytic converter. is it a jeep cherokee or wrangler? if it is there may be a recall on it. if it is a GM and has less than 80K miles on it you may also be able to get it replaced for free under the federal emissions warranty.
