There are very rich Japanese ...and some Japanese becoming poor...and this is always an issue...

In what context is this question? Yes, they have more buying power than usual developed countries but it doesn't mean they are all rich. They have lots of savings, mostly for old age. They buy some expensive stuff and the same peopl also buy very reasonable suff, depends where that stuff will be used. Things are expensive in Japan, that also gives impression that people are rich...

The middle class are probably the majority of the population.... However, it is interesting to see that (unlike countries such as Australia and the Netherlands) it is VERY difficult to get financial assistance from the government if you are unemployed.... You would have to be in a vegetable state to claim government benefits - and constantly checked up on to see if your circumstances have changed.... Many homeless in Japan also, at that!!

Most Japanese people who're employed full time make good money. They don't have anyone who's working poor. They are able to save money easily and lead a good life.

Now some have become unemployed and they do struggle. There are some homeless people and day laborers in Japan.

If you look at their base salary, they would be considered "Rich", but if you take into account the cost of living, they are mostly middle class, on the whole. For example, the average size of Japanese house is the size of lower class homes in the USA. A lot of apartments, are the size of dorm rooms, OR SMALLER, at two or three times the rent, depending on where the apartment is. So, in the end, it all evens out.
