I am on city gas, and they responed super quick. Had not done work in the area and the gas was not shut off....repair guy and said it was the ignition switch on the furnace. we are now $400 dollars lighter in the checking account. i hate being dependant on others...but I knew nothing about this. thanks for all the advice. wish it were a cheaper fix. oven is just messed up....

yup ALL the thermocouples went bad at the same time...uh hugh.
When the temps are very cold outside if you are on LP you should keep the tank above half full it affects the amount of pressure that the fuel developes as it turns to gas. If you are on city gas it is possible you are having trouble with the gas regulator outside your home have the provider check it for you they will check their equipment free of charge. All your thermocouples did not go bad at the same time.

If you use propane with the big tank in the yard, go lift the lid up and check the gauge and make sure you actually have gas in it. I would guess it is empty or the regulator is shot, call the company who delivers your propane.

If you use natural gas, call the gas company and make sure you weren't disconnected, payments get lost sometimes. If you haven't been disconnected there may be a problem with their meter where it comes into the house, or they may be servicing lines in the area they should also be able to tell you this info as well. I've seen it before. They should come and fix this free if it is their equipment that is faulty.

All appliances stopping at the same time would be very odd.

The thermocouple is bad or not positioned properly. Its about an inch long probe looking device made of brass and protrudes into the pilot flame.Has a small tube or brass wire leading back to the control unit. It detects a flame from the pilot and keeps the gas on. When no heat is detected by the thermocouple it shuts off the gas to the pilot light so you don't die of gas poison or blow up the place. It is a safety device. They do go bad and you will not be able to light the pilot without it. Be sure though that the probe is protruding into the flame when the pilot is lit. Keep the pilot button down for about a minute to heat the probe. Most thermocouples are universal. I have seen them at wal-mart. Good luck

Sounds like the regulator in the Meter has failed you are not getting enough Gas pressure to keep them lit.

Call the Gas Company emergency service NOW! There is no real danger because the pilot will shut off flow automatically. They will come out today and get it fixed. OOPS is it just the furnace, then Gas company won't touch it call heating and cooling folks. Still sounds like a gas valve or regulator

Are they standing pilots ( lit all the time)? Or are they electronic??If they are standing they may have to be cleaned and adjusted ( some are adjustable) If they are electronic, call the repair guy..Gas company or a service guy..I hope the hell you do not live in a Northern state....It is strange that they both croaked at the same time....No reason for that.....Oh, the standing pilots have a thermocouple that can go bad( forgot about that ) if the thermocouple or the emergency shut off valve that it operates are bad it will not allow the main burner to lite.. Get a service guy now, so you don;t freeze to death........

Did your gas get disconnected then turned back on? If so, the remaining gas in the lines burned at the pilots. When the pilots went out finally, the air got into the lines. You need to bleed the air out of the gas lines until you have raw gas.

when you try and light the oven do you smell gas? Is it the normal amount that you smell (if you smell any at all)?

I'm asking because I had the same problem and I was not getting enuff gas thru the line. Call your gas company and have them come out and service the line.

your problem is your therma-couple. it tells your control box to send the gas to your piolet.sometimes you can just clean it,but it is better to replace it.not very costly.it is the little do-hicky that sticks up in front of the flame from your piolet .looks kind of like a pencil ,be sure to adjust the new one at the same hieght as the old one,the flame should just hit about a 1/4 inch of the top of it. trust me this is your problem.it is very common and usually needs changing around every 3 to 4 years.the detergents in the gas along with normal sut will cause this. good luck.

Check your meter. Maybe it has been turned off.

If it is on, call your gas company. They may have done some work locally and there is air in the lines.Turn off all of your appliances until you have an answer.

Good luck!
