You should go to a good college that gives you a broad education in all areas. Sure, NYU is great, so is Columbia and many others. Don't focus on journalism in college, but rather study history, poli sci, american civilization, etc., and even the sciences. Study english, and even foreign languages. You should work on the college paper or radio station.
Then, you can go to grad school in journalism after college (Columbia is great, so is Syracuse). But remember, once you are in journalism school, you won't be able to take the same broad range of courses to become a well rounded human being.

I agree with Sam Z. I'd add that if you want to take a practical journalism course or 2 that wouldn't be bad. I took a tour of the NY Times some years back and someone asked the guide (he was a journalist) about journalism schools. He was negative about them and said that the Times wanted people with expertise in particular areas--economics, science, etc.
