To Signal They're Coming Home. This Really Sweet Guy Told Me Once That It's Origin Was From The Legend Of Two Lovers, Arturo, A Portuguese Fisherman And His Love, Catarina. After Shipping Off, Arturo Would Return....And Whenever He Came Back, He'd Signal With Three Long Blasts So Catarina Could Swim To The Boat, And They Could Be Together Again. *Winks*

You need to look at it this way. The first horn is a warning the second is a request and the third is to allow time for an all clear. Every ship has to give ample time to make sure that it is all clear to enter the harbor. The ship by the way does radio the harbor about a mile away to gain entry. The 3 honks of the horn is just a courtesy.

Gee, i dont know. I would rather be out in a harbor in a small boat and have a large battleship come sneaking up on me with no warning.
Thats kinda like asking why do trains honk their horns at railroad crossings.

Almost all are wrong here. I love how people just answer a question when they have no idea of the correct answer. This is why y'all have **** jobs, you never took the time to find out, you just made, and still make up **** to impress no one but yourselves. The answer is: 3 short bursts refer to a ship that is in astern propulsion. Not necessarily moving in reverse just in reverse propulsion mode. Wow, lets see. I spent two minute looking this up and verified it with Coast Guard regulations.
