They are usually hesitant because the other forms of medicine take "business" away from them.

Some of the methods used in alternative medicine haven't really been tested or studied, and therefore don't have a safety record attached to them.

Try going to a D.O., doctor of osteopathic medicine if you want to see a licensed physician who will better accept the idea of natural medicine. D.O.'s are trained in whole body medicine while M.D.'s are trained in symptom and treatment. Since natural medicine also targets whole body a D.O. is more likely to respond in a more open manner concerning natural treatments.

I have been attending college for 4 years, working toward a Master Cert in aromatherapy and Master diploma in herbal medicine. I will finish soon and begin my trek down the long road to becoming a D.O. I choose this path because so may people are still nervous about seeing a natural healer and the ones that aren't sometimes don't because their insurance company wont cover it. many natural practitioners get along just fine without the level of education I seek. I am going for the whole shebang in an attempt to get the general public more familiar with natural medicine and hopefully my presence in the "conventional field of medicine" will get other doctors to consider the possibilities when the two kinds of medicine are working together toward good health. Yes I know this is a big hope and a large dream, mostly due to some doctors being more interested in their summer home than actually healing people but I figure if I don't try then I have already failed.

Alternative / Natural Medicine has a lot of "snake oil salesmen" within their ranks, and since most of them sell something, it is difficult to believe that they are seeking the best for you in an impartial way.

You see over the counter medications & supplements are not regulated by anyone. No agency regulates santiation, safety and efficacy. There is no difinitive way to determine how much to give of a alternative medicine to get the desired result.

Yes, civilizations have been using a variety of products before modern medicine - because they didn't have modern medicine. We really do not have statistics regarding the effectiveness of the early medicine, or how many people were cured and how many were not cured. That is the biggest problem with the absence of information - we can not truly compare the old way with the current medicine.

One thng that we can say about current medicine, is that it has been investigated to the nth degree, and is identified with efficicy, how it works, and the side effects.

I suggest you make your choices carefully. I am not completely against everything that is alternative, but I would chose each therapy with care.

Modern medicine, which means the AMA after 1930's has evolved into drug and surgery therapy. What you have to understand is that when students who want to become doctors are constantly faced with the drug company influence all the way through schooling. So when they get out all they know is greek names for body parts and greek names for drugs. They can hardly speak English when they are through. Then they have to spend a few years in residency to get some practice at cutting and drugging patients. From there they specialize. There is no room for natural cures in their education. Herbs can take a life time of study to master. The same is true of other alternative modalities. So when you ask them about alternative medicine your talking a foreign language to them.

I've been to both types of doctors. Alternative/Natural Medicine doesn't include all the prescriptions that are given out by "Normal" / "Conventional" Medicine. You can get better a lot faster (in my opinion) usually with natural or alternative medicine, which knocks the doc out of a few office visits and the pharmacy companies loose out on the prescriptions the doc writes and the drug reps stop buying lunches etc for the docs.

Some of the cause is fear of the unknown.

Some of it is the way diseases are being defined (the government states that their medicine is the only cure for disease). Dis (un or lack of) Ease (comfort). They are defining behavior as a disease.

True but unfortunate old medicine will only die out when those who practice it die out. I would much prefer that they choose to learn.

Muscles are an example - they would rather perform surgery than make use of the books they have available to them so a piano tuner had to research and write a book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies so that you and I can fix our own pain when they (most of them) don't know what to do.

after reading all the answers, I have to agree with Minx, and a few others. Alternative takes away their business, and they, though not all,are all about the money. They should have gotten into it to heal ppl, not for the money. But I digress. Anyway...before civilations evolved,we used hollistic therepies, nature's remedies, ect. Most drs. have not been taughts about alternative medicine and therefore have no clue on how to answer when someone mentions it.

For one thing, that is not what they are trained in. Most Doctors don't have a clue about alternative medicine. There are some Doctors out there though that know the importance of both conventional medicine and alternative medicine, they are a rare breed though. Doctors don't want you treating yourself, thats what they are paid for.

Allopathic practitioners are afraid of what they don't understand. They have been bought out by the pharmaceutical companies and believe that this is the only way to treat problems. I have found some are receptive in recent years with MD's like Dr. Weils bringing alternative medicine into the mainstream.

Interesting point you make there, what were ancient civiliations doing indeed!!! I reckon that if Doctor's imparted the correct nutritional information to remedy our ailments the bulk of patients in hospitals would actually be happy and healthy at home with their families. It's definitely a conspiracy between the Doctor's, Medical Board, Pharmaceutical Giants and heavens knows maybe even the Government!!!! Doctors reason that if they heal us promptly then we won't need them will we??? Hence their total disrepect for naturopathic and wholistic measures for healing the ill.

Would also explain why the Government won't provide funding for whole food sources such as spirulina and glyconutrients, pure propagandaism, when will people learn to think for themselves.

PEACE & LOVE
