You won't have damping adjustment on an XJ. You need to adjust the preload.

To do this have a look at the bottom of the rear spring suspension and it'll either have a notched adjuster or a locknut type.

You'll need to make it "stiffer" for passenger use which means "squeezing" the spring rather than loosening it.

Ask a dealer to do it if unsure.

As a general rule suspension should have 25-30 percent sag/top out with rider or (riders) weight on the bike. Downward travel/ top out is as important as upward travel. Adjust the forks and shock(s) to allow about 1/3 of the bikes total travel to compress with both of you on the bike. Then fine tune from there.

What's with all the hate? Just 'cause he used the snooty "pillion" instead of the correct "riding bltch"? It's a simple question, no need to diss the guy. Stiffer and higher, just like you need to be with whoever is riding "pillion" when you get where you're going.

Tighten up the preload adjuster until it feels right. Remember to keep notes as to how far you have turned the adjuster nut, so you can put it back to standard later.

do the tighten up number on the rear suspension to allow for the extra pillion --- the weight factor isgoing to be more than you and the bike needs to have more tension on the rear to function properly and not have any problems....

Just crank up the preload a notch, or turn your shock collar about 3-5 mm.

You need to make it firmer mate. i'e', tightening.

Watch your chain tension too, the chain will get a lot tighter when you are twos up.

The way to adjust your suspension is to buy a new bridge or buy a new pair of tights for your suspension belt.

ps are you gay? Bet you've only got a moped with a sidecar for Quentin.
