Email is free
www.sype.com provides free internet phone communication
letters are slow but very dear when received
there are very low cost phone cards you can get like www.onesuite.com or if they are out of the country you can do a web search for low cost calling card to X country and get cards as low as 1-3 cents/minute.
Whatever you do it is worth the extra cost and effort to keep a good relationship going.
