I want to send my friend some cookies, but I don't know where to get a box to ship them in. Are there boxes available at the post office (in the US)? If so, do they cost money, or can I just walk out with one? Also, where can I get padding materials like bubble wrap or foam peanuts?

Depends on the type of box you want. I tend to get free boxes from the grocery store. You can get free priority (two day shipping) boxes at the post office, and free express packaging (one day) but they do sell other boxes, as well as bubble wrap and peanuts.

You should be able to get bubble wrap at the grocery store, business supply store or packaging store. Same with peanuts.

Post office. Get everything. Yes you have to pay, it's inexpensive.

Cheaper- Get a box at the supermarket, ball up newspaper to fill the space under and around your cookies. I ship glass like that, have for years. Never had any breakage. Your only shipping cookies.

Boxes are available at the post offic, for a price.
Suggestion:
Check out your local bakery, maybe whrere you bought the cookies?
They might pack them for you at no cost.
Become a "box, wrapper, packing saver."
Keep gift boxes(and the bubbles) after you unwrap them (Christmas, birthdays, etc). In no time you will have all sorts and sizes of boxe.

As long as there is no other address on the box, and it is sealed along all sides you can use any box, or even a peice of paper folded to make an envelope. I recomend that you put the cookies in a plastic bag (ziplock works) and them stuff newspaper around them.

Dollar store for cheap boxes. You can also try going to a store like Wal-mart and asking them for boxes that they don't need anymore. For bubble wrap go to like U-haul or a mail and packaging place.

I would get one of those disposable GLAD containers (real cheap), put the cookies in and tape the lid (just in case), go down to the US Post Office near you and ask for the Priority Mail boxes, they're free and your friend will get the cookies in 2-3 days! :)

Here's a link for the USPS website showing they're free...
