A little less than a month ago, I took my computer to a computer shop to have it looked at because it wouldn't turn on. So the guy replaced my power supply, gave me a new hard drive and upgraded my video card and it cost me $350. I was fine with the results because I could finally play the sims2 again! But starting from about a week ago, my computer will just randomly shut down and then restart. Sometimes it won't restart all the way to the start screen and it will shut down again and compulsively turn on and off. It's really annoying and it often shuts down when I'm doing something important!!

And..I don't think all this shutting down and restarting is too good for my computer...
So, can anyone tell me what the problem is here and how I can fix it? Thanks a bunch!!

Thanks for your help everyone! I fixed the problem by getting a lot of dust out of the inside of my computer and i put something to separate the computer and the carpet. It hasn't shut off on its own yet!

Thanks again!

The previous poster has a valid point; if your fan is obstructed or broken, the temperature rises pretty quickly in the box, especially if you have a 1.0GHZ CPU or faster.

Check the fan, listen to hear if it starts up at the time you hit the power switch. Clean the fan thoroughly. Check the connection wires to the fan, it may have been loosened or broken in some way.

Make sure your computer has adequate ventilation all around, and is NOT resting on top of carpet! Perhaps static electricity has something to do with your problem, if you are putting it on a carpet.

Get a wooden board of some kind to act as a floor base.

Ensure the fan is NOT right up against a wall or other obstruction that would impede the airflow.

Good Luck!

restarting and rebooting will not hurt your computer. A common sign of restarting constantly is a bad fan on your processor. That is a really cheap fix. You can also open your case and see if there is a lot of dust inside. Dust can cause your fans not to run properly and it can overheat which causes restarting. That is where I would check first.

Press (f8) at the black start up screen, to boot your computer into safe mode.
If it loads windows, then you have a driver problem.
Or try (f8), again, and choose, start with last known good.
If that does not work, then it could be:-
Motherboard fault.
Power supply.
Graphics card.
Open your case, with the power OFF.
Remove the Graphics card, and re seat it.
Remove the RAM chips, and re seat them.
Check all the cables are secure, and not loose.
Start it up with the case removed, and check the fans are turning.
If you still have problems, take it back to the repair shop!

I know you mantioned you got a new hard drive and a new video card...but is there any way he added or changed your RAM also?

When bad or uncompatable memory is used it can show these symptoms (Continual infinate shutdown adn restart, unexpected restarts and insane startup times)

If you got your computer repaired to play games most repair places will suggest more memory b/c memory is a big factor.

Uh i did not even examine all of what's above, because he in all likelihood did a much better pastime explaining than i will. lengthy tale short, it is shutting down because your equipment is merely too warm and it is going into an emergency fail threat-free close off in the previous the CPU melts and would now no longer be fastened. acceptable wager is that the fan over your CPU is now no longer operating. replace that fan.

I don't know if the powersupply that he installed is big enough or not. What kind of video card is installed on your computer?

Did you run a antivirus on the computer for virus?
