Toe rings started to show up a couplel of centuries before B.C. in india. the toe rings are worn by women as a sign of beauty, and the ring on the toe resembles the ring of ego around a person, and wearing that on your fot is like stamping on it, crushing, and destroying the ego. also, the women were rewuired to wear it because they werre expected to obey their husband, and wearing toe-rings resembled that. That is why you wouldn't see a widow wearinga toe-ring., because they have nobody to live under and obey. Hopep i helped!!!!!!!

Toe rings have been around as a fashion item for over 20 years. At first mostly in the California area, and the trend spread throughout the land. Girls are not the only ones wearing toe rings, I am a straight guy who love toe rings. I wear one on the second toe of each foot.Regardless of what ignorant people say, there is nothing gay about wearing a toe ring, it is just jewelry, and it doesn't define who you are as a person. No one should be judged just by the jewelry they wear.

When they were first worn, pf course!
Jokes apart, there are evidences of 8th century women wearing toe rings. Sculptures at 8th century world famous Belur temple in India depict women as wearing toe rings and walking their pet dogs on a leash.

I've been wearing mine for the past 25 years. Was wearing them long before they became an ordinary thing that everyone does now. Same thing with my thumb ring, and multiple ear piercings.

Since the 1990s I believe, and probably not for men because they often have hairy toes and/or their feet are not very attractive...??? A lot of women shouldn't wear them, either, because their feet are not that attractive either.
