What are you on about? It's good manners to bring booze to a party.

Maybe not ridiculous but cheap.

On the other hand if the point of a get together is enjoying each others company and you are providing the space and some snacks then I don't see anything too horrible about it. Most important is the company that you keep.

Besides if you're having a big gathering and want to provide drinks to everyone liking that could be very $$ and nearly impossible to figure out.

What's ridiculous about it? BYOB stand for bring your own beer(or whatever). Makes sense. What if you just buy Bud and nothing else. I personally don't even like beer. I would bring wine or whiskey.

You can't possibly know what everyone wants to drink. Whoever is having the party provides the entertainment and food and you bring what you like to drink. Makes sense to me.

I'd rather bring something to drink that I like instead of drinking beer I hate or going without.

We do, but we don't call them BYOB Parties.. they're just party's and we tell everyone to bring whatever they want to drink.. if they don't want to drink what we have.

Some of my friends like jack Daniel's, some like white wine, some like vodka, etc. rather than asking me to spend hundreds of dollars on booze, or only stock the booze that I like (say everclear) everyone brings their own. makes perfect sense to all of us.

NO, it isn't the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, but your question is right up there in the top two.
