1. Remove the battery and power the notebook on with just the AC adapter
2. If the screen goes black check to see if any other lights are on
3. If any lights are on, turn the power off and then back on
3a. Press F8 every 2 seconds until you get a Boot Menu
3b. Choose Safe Mode
3c. Let the computer start
3d. If the computer starts into Windows, let it run for 10 minutes
3e. If it does not shutoff, you have a software problem

4. If the computer turns off regardless of being in Safe Mode or trying to boot into Windows you have a hardware issue which could be the battery, AC adapter, or mainboard.

Other than the battery being defective, most other issues would require you to take the notebook to get serviced.

Is it plugged in when you are doing this? Try taking the battery out and starting the laptop while plugged in (with no battery).
When the screen goes black again does the computer itself turn off, or just the screen? Can you hear the fan or anything working when the screen goes black?
More info please. :)

Try fully restoring the computer. Click the F11 button when it says system. Click the one that says restore your computer to an earlier time. Then restore to a week before and see if it works.

Mine did that when the mother board went bad. Unfortuantely, all my messing around trying to fix it screwed it up worse and the computer guy had it for a week trying to fix it. Take it in.
