MIT(Boston, Mass.) is probably real close to #1 if not on the top science and engineering school in the country.

RPI (Troy, NY) is a good school and has a good engineering reputation.

Both very far from California.

US News & World Report has an issue every year of the top colleges in the country broken down by which subjects they're best at, as well as some pointers for applying for college and financial aid.
