Downtown St Paul has almost no restaurants, but you know that, right?

Mai Village is the first family owned place that comes to mind.

Its on University pretty close to the capital so that's pretty close to downtown.

O'Gara's is a great bar, but its just bar food. And its not downtown either.

Costellos's is very popular. I like to go to the grocery part and get good ingredients to use at home, especially the pizza crusts! It is very popular but not too busy usually. I'm not crazy about the food though. The atmosphere is nice, but you have to carry your own tray upstairs. Its cafeteria style.

There are not a lot of chains in the cities other than fast food, you have to cross the city line to get to Oline Garden et al.

My favorite restraunt in downtown is Ruam Mit Thai. I'm not sure if it's owned by a family but it is quite tasty!

If you ever go the to Great Smokey Mountains be sure to go to Aunt Bee's! I have never found a better home-style meal anywhere else.
