ex.3p+4p=-48

3p +4p = -48
7p= -48
p= -48/7

to add variables the variables have to be EXACTLY the same. so you can add 3p and 4p to get 7p but you cannot add 3p^2 and 4p. it's against the rules

transforming equations is really easy once you get the underlying idea of variables...

you have 3p + 4p= -48...

think of p as being something like pickles.. so you have:

3 pickles + 4 pickles = -48.. and you CAN add like terms together so you have:

7 pickles = -48
then divide both sides by 7 to get:

pickle = -(48/7)
p = -(48/7)

3p + 4p = -48

7p = -48 subtract

p = -48/7 divide 7 from both sides

leave all the unknow values on the left of equal sign. transfer all the known values to the right of equal sign. but do it step by step.
3p+4p=(-48)
7p=(-48)
p=(-48)/7=so and so

combine like terms. so since 3p and 4p both have "p" you can add them.

so you get...

7p=-48

then divide each side by 7 to solve for p.
