There's debate on how much animal protein is needed in a Uromastyx' diet. Some consider Mali's primarily vegetarian, and shouldn't be given more than 1-2 crickets every other week: http://www.sundialreptile.com/care%20sheet--uro.htm Others consider them an omnivore, and can be fed crickets 3-4 times a week: http://www.anapsid.org/uromastyx.html
I know for a fact that Mali's will eat them, especially young ones with a higher protein requirement, but I prefer to stick with a primarily vegetarian diet for older individuals. Too many crickets (any insects) given to any herbivore can lead to kidney problems/failure, so why chance it?

NO! Don't feed them crickets, especially if its a juvie. Feed them lentils that have been soaked overnight if you are concerned about their protein intake. There are many reported incidences of uro's dying because the crickets get stuck and pinch their spinal cord. I have an Egypt Uro and I feed him Escarole, Endive, Bok Choy, sprinkled 2 times a week with a protein/calcium supp, and lentils every other day, and always have a bowl of bird seed (Wild Finch Mix). If you are looking to diversify his/her diet a bit, try some occasional rose petals or edible flowers, and small amount of fruit such as mango. Check out the RepticZone website to keep up to date on the best diet for a Uro.
