It seems that I see commercials every day about starving children in the 3rd world countries. What about our children? We may not be a third world country, but there are children starving here as well. The children dont know the difference in 3rd world countried and our country. Lets feed our countries children before we try to fix other countries problems. that is what is wrong in this country. We dont take care of our own.

I imagine the real reason for much of this poverty is because "we", as a society, have judged the parents to be "unworthy" of our support, and the children take the biggest hit. Some would go so far as to say these children should not have been born. Many more live in remote rural pockets where there are insufficient funds for public services. And I think those people don't even seem real to those of us in the cities and suburbs.

As far as helping those in third world countries, we are often responding to a natural disaster, or to a vicious government. We really know so little about these countries that we don't have any prejudice against those in need. Also, when we respond to aforeign need, it is often on behalf of a large and concentrated population.

I am sure I'll get thumbs down, but ... your question made me really try to think about what the answer could be. I do not mean to be condemning "us". It is human nature to want to both help others and to judge others.

Children in the US and Canada may not have everything they need, but, they are far better off than say ... children in Ethiopia and Bangladesh.
