It's not written in the bible, but it goes that far back. Until the early 1900's, women were not considered people in their own right - girls were the property of their fathers. When they married, they became the property of their husband, and taking his name was how other people knew who's property she was. With the suffragette movement, and legislation recognising women as "persons", women were no longer considered to be any man's personal property. The tradition of changing names continues, but it's no longer about ownership. Your friend has every right to keep the name she was born with when she marries.

He can but i think it would be wrong to do so especially to your wife and marriage and she may have to agree to it but i am not sure... Contact a lawyer and find out... By the way why are you wanting to change your last name anyways? Seems kinda sneaky and underhanded if you ask me.

Yes he can, the wife's consent is not required. It would be strange for someone to take such a drastic step without first discussing it with their significant other - but it's not illegal.

Anyone can change their name anytime they want. Being married does not give someone ownership over the other person.
