A^2 - A = A(A-1)
X^2 +X - 6 = (X + 3)(X - 2)
2X^2 - 8 = 2(X^2 - 4) = 2(X-2)(X+2)
X^3 + 8 = (X+2)( X^2-2X+4)

To factor the first, remove the common element from each term. Hence a^2-a factored becomes a(a-1).

For the second, you have to use what I call reverse FOIL. The quadratic x^2+x-6 becomes (x+3)(x-2).

The third is similar to the second. Factor using the reverse FOIL method to obtain (2x+4)(x-2).
