I believe you are assuming that welfare recipients don't work. Most do.
I know that as a taxpayer, and as a caseworker IN the welfare office (for the last 15 years) I have no problem with someone having a computer and having internet access- come on- you can get dialup for no more than $15 per month! I'd rather see a young mother buy a computer with her income tax than to buy a bunch of pairs of $100 shoes for her kids....
Think of the computer and what it can do....you can do job searches, you can do resumes, you can take online college classes, you can do tutorials for other things in order to get a job or get a BETTER job.
I have a computer and I have internet (obviously)- and my kids benefit from this a great deal for school. Should a client's kids not be able to do research, type out a paper on Word, find info out there about colleges, etc?
I suppose there are people out there that would prefer to see the poor sitting in windowless houses with absolutely no amenities. No small luxury at all. I think having the internet can open up the world- especially to a client's children....give them something to strive for....which would, hopefully- keep THEM off the system.

a) you never know what circumstances will occur to put you in the category of folks who will need "a handout" so don't judge that just because someone had a computer when they lost their job or husband or whatever means they should sell the computer to buy groceries. Ever try to sell a computer? They're worth nothing as soon as you buy them because a new model that's better came out 10 minutes after you bought one that was top of the line.
b) if you have a wireless device, you can feed off your neighbor's paid internet service and it's free
c) some folks are on the internet from the library or their brother's house, they don't even own the computer
d) just because someone is temporarily having a difficult time doesn't mean they are losers or will be on welfare forever. In fact, it's not even welfare any more... it's changed so many times you wouldn't recognize the system...
e) there are programs under "Welfare to Work" that give computers to folks who complete the computer training class and it enables them to practice their skills further, work from home and get a job. Any problems with this?

Dearest Emily, Since you asked, here is a statistical fact:
Most of the people on welfare are white women with children whose husbands or father of children aren't currently ponying up the payments needed to support their children. Those children may not have always been poor or needed welfare...standard of living goes up for dad when he leaves...standard of living goes down for the mom and the children.
Maybe she hasn't had to pawn the computer yet for the $25-$50 bucks she'd get for it to feed the kids or keep the lights on...yet.
Why are you so angry at woman with children? Where is all the anger towards the majority of the white males whose children are on welfare and aren't helping or aren't helping enough to pay for their children? (I used to work Child Support and Recovery.)
By the way, the county I live in pays for laptops and online service for High School aged children. The entire family benefits from that service. That's part of what my tax money goes for and I'm proud of that! I live in a predominately "red" county that has been visited quite a few times by (both) Bush(es) at the High School/Middle School level. Very few people are belly aching here about our tax money for welfare recipients though we have our share, as all middle income Americans do.
Let's talk about waste in government spending that occurs when we don't have a good check and balance going on because the deck is loaded with too many from one side! Control by all Republican or all Democratic Parties give us unbalanced budgets, huge deficits with out of control spending. (Recent case in point: B. Clinton administration vs. W. Bush administration)
I can't believe as a woman that you are blaming the most vulnerable in our society for your discontent on the amount of taxes the middle class pays. The middle class has always bore the brunt of the taxes regardless of what party is in charge. If you think that's unfair, then try voting for a President that's going to make the predominately Republican Upper Crust pay out its fair share of tax percentages! Because historically they haven't and currently, they don't.
Sincerely, Mlee

Too many people on welfare - generation after generation..I see these people paying for their groceries with their food stamps and they drive nicer cars than i do - some system we have. Lets blame the dems!!
The worst are the immigrants from eastern europe, they really flaunt their jewelry and cars at the supermarket- at least act like you need it!!!

You have to know the system to use the system. If you work in a shoe factory, you could tell me more about leather and where it comes from than the computer technician. I have more access to computers and the Internet without owning one than anyone that work 8 to 12 hours a day, without a computer.

It's a glitch in the system and people who don't really need it take advantage because they qualify. People without enough sense look for any handout they can get. Scavengers

please know that the percentage of the federal budget that goes to welfare is less than 1%. The people on welfare are only slightly better off than the people making your shoes and clothing for a pittance in southeast asia. People who don't want you to understand how the economy is actually functioning are directing your dissatisfaction with your own conditions to people who have absolutely nothing to do with your future insecurity, who have as little to say about where money goes as you do. The flow of capital is determined by those controlling large amounts of it. Think about outsourcing- whose call is that?

Perhaps they are answering you from the local Library...they have lots of computers there. But if you are right in your assessment...and feel strongly about that issue then run for office and put an end to the gravy train.

Because liberals are running our goverment.
It's so ridiculous that people who don't even need it can be on welfare. It's supposed to be for hard working people, not scumbags that most likely don't even have a job.
