Fine, some may do drugs and not work as much as other people (though, how do you think they survive if they dont? There's only so much help the govt will give you...) they also had DECENT VALUES that so many other groups don't, such as peace, love, acceptance and getting back to/looking after nature.
And patriotism? War? It is the saddest thing ever to be angry with someone for not supporting the killing of thousands of people... I will not support war, there are always better ways of doing things.

I think we fear what we do not understand. We live in a capitalist society where we measure our lives by what we obtain. The hippies life style is based on inner happiness, self satisfaction and peaceful solutions.
To accuse them of drug abuse is such a hypocritical joke. Look at the number antidepressants available, they even have a pill now for restless legs. The industry may call them pharmaceuticals but at the end of the day they are still drugs and we are still addicted.
As for the war, are they so wrong to say that we should find a better way to solve our problems. Personally if we can find a solution that doesn't leave 3000 of our men and women dead I'm all for it. I think one of the problems they have w/ this war and as with Vietnam is that we don't belong there. At what point did we stop trying to avenge ourselves and decide to become dictator of their nations. The gov't is mishandling their powers and not considering the wishes of their people. I believe that has always been the hippies message.
There was a tribe of bushman that I read about in the book The Old Way by Elizabeth Thomas that lived as what would by those standards be called "hippies". They owned almost nothing lived in meager shelter and moved from location to location depending on the season. Of course we couldn't understand how this could be a satisfactory life and eventually screwed it all up for them. But my point is until we intervened they used only what they need, respecting their environment therefore always having enough to provide for their people. Their murder rate was almost non-existent because they understood the importance of the group and each others contribution and therefore made a very big deal of finding peaceable solutions. A way that we really should consider our global community.
So in the end we dislike the hippies lifestyle because its "different" but if we took a step back from out greed and self absorption we could take in some very important lessons. Even if we don't all go so far as to run out and hug a tree.

I have no idea. Personally, I love hippies. Never had a single bad thing to say about a single one of them.
